I fell in love with prepping my own chai tea a couple of years ago when a friend of mine shared with me a BBM photo of her own. It looked so beautiful and I just adored the idea of blending spices (to my liking) and making this super aromatic tea!
Here is my preferred recipe.
Homemade Masala Chai
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup water
- 2-4 whole green cardamom pods, smashed
- 1-2 thin slices fresh ginger
- 1 1-inch cinnamon stick
- 1 piece star anise
- 3/4 cup almond milk (can use coconut milk here too)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons loose black tea leaves ( you can use a tea bag too)
- Sweetener, to taste (I prefer coconut sugar or honey)
In a saucepan, combine the water, cardamom, star anise, ginger, cinnamon stick and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until the mixture becomes beautifully aromatic. Add almond milk and tea leaves (or bag) and simmer for another minute or two. Turn off the heat and let steep for another 2 minutes (or longer if you prefer a stronger tea). Pour into a cup through a fine mesh sieve. Discard the leaves and spices. Add sweetener as desired.
