What is Naturopathic Medicine?
We hear about the wonders that Naturopathic Doctors have done for them (your friends, a family member, a neighbor or an acquaintance) but perhaps you are still left wondering – what exactly do they do and could a Naturopath be right for you?
Naturopathic medicine is not new. In fact, it can be traced back to over 2400 years when the Greek physician Hippocrates theorized that pivotal concept “the healing power of nature”.
By the 1920s, Naturopathic practices were well established in Canada and it wasn’t until after World War 2 that the more traditional natural healing practices sadly lost ground in North America – due mostly to the growth of the pharmaceutical industry and the rise in antibiotic prescriptions.
What do Naturopathic Doctors Do?
Naturopathic Doctors are highly educated and trained in accredited naturopathic medical colleges. Like medical doctors, they can both diagnose and treat acute and chronic illness; they differ in their methods.
Unlike medical doctors, however, they work to prevent, restore and establish optimal health. The do this through supporting the inherent self-healing process that we all have – the body wants to be in a state of wellness.
In other words, instead of just suppressing and treating symptoms (let’s say with medicine or surgery) a Naturopathic Doctor works to identify the ROOT CAUSE of the problem and develops a highly customized, multi-faceted treatment plan.
